Year of the Snake greeting card
蛇年贺图

October 7, 2024

With Chinese New Year approaching, I created two works to celebrate. This set of works is designed from two perspectives.

First, from the perspective of daily life, the images depict people celebrating the Spring Festival in a lively and bustling atmosphere. Adults and children play on carp lanterns, some set off fireworks, some chase away the Nian beast, and some shop.

Second, from the perspective of cultural activities, lion dances are very important in Lingnan culture. Whether it's a business opening, the New Year, or any other festive occasion, a lion dance troupe is often called upon to perform. This painting uses lion dance as a theme to depict a lively and bustling scene.

Both images share a common theme: forward movement. Whether it's the majestic strides or the lion stepping on a wooden stake to grab the prize, both express a wish for greater prosperity, progress, and wealth in the new year. I chose a more conservative approach to the colors, using more traditional hues.
